chapter 19

western powers and the effects of it: the overall idea of this chapter is to encapsulate the power of the west on the cultures and ideas of the Asian countries. the west was looking for any means necessary to balance the trade between them and china. the British brought about the means to create opium and export it to china because of its addictive nature and the demand went soaring through the roof. thus creating the opium wars. in addition the chapter disussed the sick man of europe which in other words is the ottoman empire. the other European nations poke fun at this name because they are no longer empires but sovereign states that make up all of Europe. the ottoman emprie has lost all of it true power. moreover japan is creating itself into the eastern power through westernization. they use western ways to use and gain their own identity through adaption and growth from their building blocks.
